Prologue
I was driving only at 40 mph when the limit was 35 mph on a nice summer evening, my window was down and the cool, summer breeze hits my face.
This dude came in front of me 'cause I was going to slow for his taste. It looked like he was drunk so I pulled over to let him pass me. But you know, he stopped, came out of his car and I realized it was a person I went to college with, Brian.
"Hey Lucas!" Brian said to me a bit drunk
"Hey Brian, what happened?" I said nervously.
"Oh, nothing!! Just had a drink or two!"
"Well I've gotta go, bye Brian."
"No come back here!" He yelled, but I had already sped off. He comes behind me driving dangerously fast, and he crashes into my car, I feel pain then everything went blank, that day I died. I don't know how my sister Leya would handle this, but somehow she got through it.
Chapter 1
(Leya's POV)
“Greysen,” I started to say, “Can you come over on Saturday to the art gallery on Adkins Street?”
“Yeah, Leya, I’d be delighted to!” Greysen said happily.
So then I hung up and then thought, what to do, what to do? My brother died in a car crash, and I’ve been pretty moody lately, nobody to talk to. I’m a detective, yeah like Jessica from Murder, She Wrote or Sherlock. All of my investigations have been a success. I work for a company called Jurisdiction Inc, Greysen and Olivia are my best friends, they’ve been helpful with my brother’s death.I feel a little vibrating in my pocket.
“Hello?”
“Hey Leya, it’s Olivia, can you you come over?”
“I don’t know if I ca-”
“Leya, come on, it’s a Wednesday and this has been a pretty bad week for all of us.”
“I guess I can.” “Yes!! You can come over in about 10 minutes,ok?”
“Olivia you know, you’re the most persuading 29 year old I know.”
“You’re the most clever 28 year old I know.”
“I know I am! Let me get ready, I’ll be there in a few.”
“Ok, bye.” She says,
“Bye!”
I get in the car and pass by the art gallery, only to find that there are cops all around the entrance.
“What the heck? I need to call Olivia.” I say.
“Olivia? I need to make a rain check, what about Sunday?”
“Sure, what is it?”
“Well I’m passing the gallery and-”
“Which one?”
“The one on Adkins street.”
“Oh.”
“There are cops all around the perimeter it looks like.”
“Ok, well, I’ll see you on Sunday,” she says sadly. “Bye.”
I hang up and get out of the car.
“S’cuse me officer.” I say, and the officer looks furious,
“Can’t you see the caution tape? Move!”
I pull out my badge and say, “I work for the Jurisdiction Inc.”
“Oh, so sorry ma'am go ahead.”
“No worries, you’re just doing your job, by any chance do you have the details about the case?”
“Yes we do, a thief came in around 2:00 am and stole a piece, it was a mask that represents death, and this thief killed the
guard that was patrolling the area. He was stabbed in the back with a hunting knife. The knife was not at the scene of the crime.”
“Thank you sir, may I go into inspect?”
“Yeah, I hope this information helped!”
“It did! Thank you so much!”
Chapter 2
(Olivia’s POV)
I can understand why Leya is so sad and moody, her brother just died, but she always never has time for me now! I know it’s New York and crimes happen, but I called Greysen said she was all open, and she couldn’t come because cops were at stupid art gallery?! I am so mad at her I feel like she always shuts me down, always declines every single time. Now if was Greysen she would say yes, but me no, never me. Well I need to get to the office, the chief would be mad, oh forgot to say, I’m a cop, work with Greysen and sometimes Leya. I get to the office and ask chief what I need to do,
“Lieutenant I’m assigning you to the art gallery investigation, you said something about have a friend working at the Jurisdiction Inc as a detective, apparently she’s there right now, you can work with her, ok?”
“Well sir I don’t thin-”
“I don’t have time for this, just go and work with her, she’ll give you the details about the case, no buts, no nothing, just go.”
“Yes sir.”
I heavily sighed, ugh, right now I’m mad. I don’t even know why I came to the office, it’s my time in the evening I don't need to come in my personal time, and why would the chief get mad he knows I never come in at night. Maybe I should stop being friends with her, I could really kill someone right now…………..
Chapter 3
(Leya’s POV)
I go in and look around and I spot broken glass from when the thief broke into the display, and blood from the guard’s death, I look around, the gallery isn’t that big, just two rooms. I write down everything I see. I ask the director something that I didn’t notice before, a plant that was leaning on the right side, but the last time I was there, the plant was leaning on the left side, he said it probably just moved, but he doesn’t really know.
“Who was here, er more like who found all of this mess?” I asked the director,
“Well, I think it was Tabatha Conti, yeah it was Tabatha, she is my boss, we were getting a new display so she came in at 8 to
start moving everything to have more space.”
“Do you know where she is right now?”
“She should be at the police station.”
“Ok, thanks, if anyone asks if I’m here, just say ‘she’s at the police station.’”
“Sure thing, I think someone was coming, uh Lieutenant Olivia L.”
“Oh she’s gonna be really absurd, just tell her I’m unavailable and I’m going back to the office, bye now!”
I think I heard a faint goodbye, but I don’t know. I get in the car and turn on the radio, today’s hits and Adele’s Send My Love (To Your New Lover) comes on, “Man I’m glad her new album is becoming a hit.” If you haven’t noticed, I’m kind of an Adele fan,a really big fan. I reach the station and ask for Tabatha Conti, they said she was in the interrogation room.
“S’cuse me officer, I work for Jurisdiction Inc, may I ask Mrs. Conti a few questions please?”
“Yes ma’am you may.”
“Thank you kind sir.”
“And you are…?” Tabatha said.
“I am Leya, I’m a detective fro-”
“Yeah, yeah from Jurisdiction Inc, I have things to do and I didn’t do it! Jeez, can’t anyone understand this?!” She says angrily,
“That’s what everyone says, and it’s my job to investigate and interrogate suspects.”
“So now I’m a suspect?! I just came in this morning to make room for the new display!”
“I understand…. Is the new display in the back room?”
“Yeah, it should’ve been,” Tabatha says kind of unsure, “it was, the new display is called Frank Holiday, very colorful and
messy.”
“Can I see a picture please?”
“Yeah.”
She pulled out her phone and showed me the picture. It had red, blue, green, black, pink everything! She was right, it is very messy and colorful.
“Where were you early morning at 2 am?”
“I was in bed sleeping, I can’t stay up that late, usually.”
“Thank you for your time, one more question then you can go.”
“Sure what is it?”
“Can I get your contact information please, and you’re gonna have to able to come whenever I call you, and, don’t leave town.”
“Ok, but do I have come even at like 3 am?”
“Yes ma’am.” I get her contact information and say one last thing to her,
“Thank you for your time today, you are free to go.”
“Thanks.” She says happily.
I walk out and the same officer that was in the interrogation room with Tabatha pulls me over.
“She can’t go, we have further questions for her.”
“Officer, she’s been here all day, it’s 9 pm, she needs to rest, you can ask her questions tomorrow, I suggest you go home to, good evening.”
I left it at that and walked out. I needed to get home and rest, I have a lot of work to do tomorrow.
